Coming around for another Queens Birthday long weekend, the Melrose Fat Tyre Festival is back again this June. Serving as something of a pilgrimage for mountain bikers around Australia, Melrose is an amazing riding destination that’s nestled in at the foot of Mt Remarkable at the Southern end of the Flinders Ranges. An otherwise small country town, the population in Melrose will swell over the weekend of June 7-10th, as riders from all over the country make their way to one of the best riding events on the calendar. What might be unusual for a lot of our readers, is that there’s no actual racing as part of the festival. Nope, the FTF is all about riding sweet trails, meeting new people, sampling local produce, hitting up the pump track and just generally enjoying life.
“Every June Long weekend over 250 registered riders come to Melrose for the Fat Tyre Festival – some making this event their “must do ” every year! Riders love the chilled out vibe and non competitive nature of the event. They come to improve their skills, ride trails they wouldn’t normally be allowed to ride on outside festival times, meet new friends and enjoy all the entertainment through out the day and night!” – Southern Flinders Rough Riders
Enduro was lucky enough to cover both last years FTF and the ’18 Hours of Melrose’ events. You probably don’t need us to tell you that the riding is amazing over there, but if you need any convincing, this video will likely do that very well:
We absolutely loved our time in the Flinders Ranges, and we would have wanted to after making the epic road trip from Melbourne. One of our companions was a Scottish mate by the name of Ben, who had never driven in a car for more than 2.5 hours. As such, the 11 hour (each way!) hike was quite the spectacle, though an absolutely awesome way to see more of our Aussie backyard. If you want to check out our race report from last year, have a read of the 18 Hours of Melrose.
In terms of getting to Melrose, you don’t have to jump in the car like we did. Melrose is about 3 hours drive from Adelaide, and conveniently there is a bus that goes to and from that can take your bike on board. Otherwise, we can highly recommend swinging a couple of extra days either side of the weekend for a pretty special road trip and a riding experience that you will not forget in a hurry.
