We’ve been riding in a pair of Teva Pivot SPD test shoes over the past 6 months, which have impressed us with their fit, lightweight and smooth interface with multiple clipless mountain bike pedals. We previewed the Teva Pivot shoes online here, and you can read our review of them in Issue #25 of Enduro Magazine.

You probably all know the Teva name for the infamous range of hiking sandles, boots and shoes, but over the past 2 years they’ve begun to make inroads into the mountain bike market with the release of the Links flat-pedal shoe. Taking valuable experience from their existing range, plus with the input of pro athletes such as Jeff Lenosky, Teva has quickly risen to the top of desirable riding footwear to rival the likes of Shimano, 5-10 and Vans. The Pivot shoes we’ve been riding with are the companies first SPD-compatible shoe, and they have just become available to the public this month. What many people don’t know however, is that Teva’s cycling range of shoes has exploded over the past few months, and here we take a look at a couple of the new kicks from that range.

The Crank Shoe is a paired back version of the Links shoe, with less bulk for a more streamlined aesthetic. This makes them a lighter shoe overall, and so they’re perfect for XC, trail riding, dirt jumping, commuting or just tooling around on city streets.

The outersold uses their sticky ‘Spider365’ rubber that uses a softer compound for grip on the pedals. They’re flat pedal specific, and feature a unique tread pattern that’s built for the interface with spiky pins used on flat pedals. Inside, the midsole is reinforced to provide a stiff platform all the way through the shoe so that flex is reduced underfoot. The effect is like having a stiffer pair of skate shoes that don’t flex over the top of the pedal, which should make for a much more comfortable option for all day trail riding.

“At the Teva Mountain Games, we watched tons of riders in skate shoes struggling up the hill after their rides. Right then, we decided to bring our PedalLINK Outsole technology to the iconic vulc style. The result is the Crank, a vulc-style sneaker with grip features meant specifically for biking.” – Teva

M_1002996_Carbon_BLKThe Carbon shoe utilises many of the same features of the Crank shoe, but throws in a whole chunk of urban style for a very slick looking pair of shoes. They’re kind of like a pair of Vans in terms of style and feel, but with a reinforced midsole that makes them much more comfortable and efficient on top of the pedals. While they may look like a dedicated commuting/urban shoe, they use the same tech as the more rugged shoes, so there’s nothing stopping you from hitting the dirt on your commute to and from work.

“What’s worse? Slipping off your bike pedals or going horizontal on a wet sidewalk in front of your friends? We think it’s a tie, so we built the Carbon to keep you on your feet in both situations. Designed as a casual work/play commuter, it’s a premium upgrade from other casual bike shoes – thanks to the fine leather and micro-canvas upper, and the super-traction sole below. The Spider365 rubber and PedalLINK pattern provide amazing grip without bulking out the low profile. And the leather won’t tear up inside your pedal cage.” – Teva

Slipping off your pedal can be painful … and really, really awkward. To prevent that, we worked with our team of professional freeride bikers to develop the PedalLINK outsole. It was designed to link up with the pegs of your pedal to keep your foot in place and in control. On top of that, it’s got lugs at the toe and heel to help you get around when you’re off your bike.

Now you can probably tell, but the Cedar shoes weren’t exactly designed for a 4-hour pedal fest in the bush, but we just couldn’t help ourselves – these look boss! The Cedar shoes come in two different finishes, with the above being a Leather upper, and a Suede upper being the other option. They take on a work boot style and finish, but still use a soft rubber outersole that is actually quite sticky on flat pedals. If you’re an urban warrior who uses two wheels to make it across town for a meeting or a quick coffee, the Teva Cedar shoes could be an ideal all-in-one shoe so that you don’t have to throw in both a pair of riding shoes and casual shoes into the gear bag.
